Herefordshire will once more have a High Sheriff of its own, having shared the appointment with Worcestershire for a number of years.
Mrs Elizabeth Hunter of Putley is to be confirmed as the new High Sheriff for Herefordshire and Worcestershire at a ceremony at the Shirehall in Worcester on Thursday 25th March. At the same time, Mr Jeremy Wilding, a partner with Gabbs Solicitors, is to be appointed as Under Sheriff for Herefordshire.
When the counties of Herefordshire and Worcestershire joined to form one county in 1972, the post of High Sheriff also merged, but it wil be separated once again in 2011. Mrs Hunter will therefore be the last to hold office in both counties.
High Sheriffs are responsible in the Counties of England and Wales for duties conferred by the Crown through Warrant from the Privy Council including: attendance at Royal visits to the County, the well being and protection of Her Majesty's High Court Judges when on Circuit in the County and attending them in Court during the legal terms, the annual appointment of an Under Sheriff, acting as the Returning Officer for Parliamentary Elections in County constituencies, responsibility for the proclamation of the accession of a new Sovereign and the maintenance of the loyalty of subjects to the Crown. The Warrant of Appointment as High Sheriff remains valid even on the death of the Sovereign. In practice some of these responsibilities are delegated to the professional services, for example the protection of the Judges and the maintenance of law and order are in the hands of the Chief Constable of Police.

The Association was founded on 1st October 1971. Its objects are to develop the unique role of the High Sheriff to the benefit of the community, and to protect, promote and sustain the ancient Office and traditions of the High Sheriff. Membership is open to past and present High Sheriffs; to persons in nomination as future High Sheriffs to whom it proves to be of particular value in preparing for Office and the way ahead; and to Under Sheriffs. The Association provides in nomination Conferences, Crimebeat workshops and other meetings that enable members to meet and discuss matters of common interest.
