Retirement Age Challenge

Thursday 1st October 2009

A recent hearing in the High Court has confirmed that the UK's default retirement age of 65 is not unlawful. This follows an action brought by Age Concern who sought a ruling that the UK's age regulations amounted to a breach of the age discimination rules laid down by EU Directive. However, it seems that the saga is by no means over. The Judge, Mr Justice Blake, said that the case for raising the retirement age was "compelling" with a formal review of the law pending.

No doubt both employers and employees will continue to "watch this space".
